Governance and Accountability: All for One, One for All

On a global level, the poor state of infrastructure, public health as well as welfare has been attributed to the bad governance and unaccountability of leaders. And accountability is one of the many terms that have been on the lips of people of every nation towards ensuring equity among citizens irrespective of class or gender.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations put governance as the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented (or not implemented). And a United States Senator, Jon Tester, rightly said we don’t need more money in politics; we need more accountability.”

Governance can be said to be good and accountable when even the smallest group of people are taking into consideration in the decision-making process of any community or nation, with the entrenchment of the rule of law and, equitability and inclusiveness; the mark of true democracy is not in the rule of its majority but in the protection of its minority.

Good governance and accountability give citizens the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process of the state (government) at all levels, ensuring that the citizens are taking into consideration before any decision of public concern is being made – the government must be responsible for every units of humans in the community.

The case of the recently signed Anti-Gay Law in Nigeria, prohibiting the practise of homosexuality within the territory of the country shows that the government doesn’t take the interest of the gay, minority as commentators are putting them into consideration before going ahead to make the law. The government should be ready to accept and accommodate the difference of people that made up the populace.

Meanwhile I’M STRAIGHT and do not see any danger the practise poses to the culture, my own opinion tho.

Any country looking forward to achieving great must be ready to embrace good governance while also holding their leaders accountable. And all hands must be on deck, both the leaders and the followers must be accountable.

However, to truly achieve good governance and accountability in every economy, whether developed, developing or under-developed, the government at all levels must be ready to accept every citizens and give them a voice irrespective of their class in the society, tribe, gender or age; everybody should have a say without taking into consideration the political, social or economic status of the citizenry.

Good governance and accountability is a state when even local populace are entitled a say in the resources’ management of their locality which also denotes that the central and regional government is also accountable.

The populace must also be ready and willing to take responsibility to serve as a watchdog to the leaders; putting the leaders on their toes by keeping tabs on government activities while also providing critical opinion.

And the government on their part should also ensure that updates about activities of the government is always made available to the public and should also be willing and ready to accept feedbacks from the public. The government and the governed should view governance as a collective assignment of both parties.
